Assignment 1: Diversity and Families

Assignment 1: Diversity and Families

Throughout this course, you have learned about various aspects of multiculturalism. You have also been asked to critically analyze various components of culture and discuss how and whether they relate to the human services industry.

In Module 5, the focus has been on aspects of diversity related to the family; however, there are a few aspects of diversity that can impact a family that have not been highlighted in this course—age and disability. As the average life span continues to grow, more family members are caring for their elderly parents. Also, family members are frequently taking care of a child, spouse, parent, or extended relative with a disability, and it is important to consider disability in broad terms (i.e., a child with autism, a sister with multiple sclerosis, etc.).

In a minimum of 300 words, post your responses to the following:With regard to the human services industry, what challenges might families face when it comes to caring for an elderly family member or a family member with a disability? What are some resources available for families in these situations? Because disability is a broad category, you may identify a specific disability to address. Be specific in your responses and illustrate using examples.

Prepare: At this point in the course, you should have completed a rough draft of your Final Argumentative Essay. In preparation for this discussion, make a list of what you learned most throughout this process, as well as difficulties you may have encountered along the way. Reflect: Think about what you have learned in the development of your research findings on the global societal issue you chose in the Week Two Discussion, your proposed solution. and its ethical outcomes, and share with your classmates why this specific issues requires further research. Write: For this discussion, you will address the following prompts:Identify the global societal issue you have chosen to research for your Final Argumentative Essay and explain why further research on this topic is important.Provide a clear and concise thesis statement that includes a solution to the global societal issue.Explain how this global societal issue impacts a specific population.Locate a peer-reviewed scholarly source and provide statistical data that you found surprising on the topic.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length, which should include a thorough response to each prompt. You are required to provide in-text citations of applicable required reading materials and/or any other outside sources you use to support your claims. Provide full reference information of all sources cited at the end of your response. Please use correct APA format when writing in-text citations and references . Respond to Peers: Review your classmates’ posts, and respond to at least two peers by Day 7. In response to your classmates, offer some other solutions to the global societal issue

Week 2-Women in Psychology.

In preparation for this paper, select a woman who has made significant contributions to the field of psychology between the years 1850 and 1950. Based on your selected individual, prepare a 1,400 word paper in which you describe her background, theoretical perspective, and contributions to the field of psychology.

1)  Please meet the  length requirement.  I find that it is difficult to fully answer the questions at hand in anything less than the minimum length requirement.

2)  Format your paper in  APA format.  There are good references for how to do so on the UOP library page.

3)  Make sure your  thesis is stated in your introduction and every paragraph somehow ties back to that thesis.  A good way to do this is to end your introduction with something like “The purpose of the following paper is to…”

4)   Do not use any first person (“I” “me” “we” “our”) or second person (“you”) in academic writing.  Try to speak in a scholarly third person omniscient tone.  Do not make “I believe” or “I feel” or “I liked this I didn’t like this” statements.  Don’t use any first person examples.  Use research instead. Use evidence.  Let’s save our personal experience for our fun discussions in the discussion forum!!

5)  Subject headings are not required, but I find that they really help students organize their thoughts.

6)   Do not use too many direct quotes. A few here and there are great, but not too many.  I want to hear YOU!

7)   DO NOT PLAGIARIZE.  I have a sixth sense for it.  Just don’t do it.

8)   Try to avoid rewriting something you are reading.  Read it.  Digest it.  Then write it in your own words, citing your source, of course.

9)   YOU MUST CITE YOUR SOURCES!  Whenever you take information from a source, whether it is the text or anything else, you MUST credit where that information came from in the form of an in-text citation.  Cite in APA format (never use a url as an in-text citation). This does not mean you have to quote something.  Just credit the source with a citation.

10) Aim to use  at least  two sources in each paragraph…or else you are just rewriting something someone else wrote.  I want to see how you can research a topic and integrate what you learn from multiple sources in order to come up with your own answer.  Always cite though.

11)   Use more than the text book. Its a great place to start.  Then venture off to the UOP library database.

12)   Only cite sources that you actually read.  If you want to cite something that comes out of an old book that you didn’t read, cite the source you actually got it from (i.e. Freud, 1908 as cited in Smith, 2010).

13)   Do not use another source’s reference list.  This is a form of plagiarism.

14)  Wikipedia,, and other such sites are not accepted as good resources.  Avoid web sites that basically answer the question for you (like essays-for-sale sites).

15)   Please proof read.  I find it is handy to read it out loud.  Write Point is a good editor as well.

16)  Make sure your  conclusion ties back into your thesis.

17)  Include a  reference page in APA format

18)  Do not include a lot of biographical information in papers that don’t need it.  For instance, with the women in psychology paper bio is ok!  But for the theoretical perspectives paper, it is not necessary where Watson went to school or that Skinner wanted to be a novelist.  It is just “filler”

PAD 510 Assignment 2, Analyzing the Policy (US Foreign Policy on Iraq War)

This is a continuation of the first assignment. Choose one (1) of the two (2) policies that you used in Assignment 1 and continue your research and analysis for Assignment 2.

Submit your Assignment 1 revision based on your professors feedback. Then, write a 45 page paper in which you

Write a one page summary of the policy, including the purpose, the context of the problem, and any recommendations or suggestions from the policy to address the problem. (Use your summary skills to keep this to one page.)
Explain who all the players are – official and unofficial, and interest groups – involved with your policy.
Describe the role and function of each of the players you identified.
Of the list of players you identified, pick two (2) and describe the political influence of each player, explaining motives, conflicts, interrelationships, and impacts on the policy.

Unit 1: Unit 1: Introduction to Child and Adolescent Development – Discussion

After you have completed the Reading, and without reviewing your classmate’s responses, post your initial response to the following Discussion. Your post should be at least 200-250 words in length and should extend the discussion of the group, supported by your course materials and/or other appropriate resources.

Methods for Studying Behaviors

In your Reading this week, you learned about the five major perspectives on child development (refer to Table 2-3) as well as the various types of research that can be utilized to gather information on development (refer to Table 2-4).

Imagine that you are working as a human service professional to evaluate the developmental progress of children. Today, you are working with two and three-year-old brothers whose mother was addicted to cocaine during the pregnancies, as well as over the last two years. The children play in your office and refuse to talk to you or even look at you. You decide that you need to conduct further research to determine the needs of each child.

Discuss which perspective(s) you would utilize to conceptualize the children’s current development and needs. Then, explore which type of research you feel would be most beneficial in gaining any additional information needed in your analysis. Discussion responses should be on topic, original, and contribute to the quality of the Discussion by making frequent informed references to course materials and Seminars. Remember to respond to at least two classmates with comments that forward the Discussion. Once you have posted your answer, offer suggestions or ask questions about your classmates’ designs.

Ethics and Professional Issues

Respond in 500 words with three or more scholarly references. Use citations, cite your references. Please use attachment to answer question.  Cite every sentence with content from your sources. There are a few ways to do that including just putting the citation at the end of each sentence.

What did you find most interesting or “surprising” about the attachment

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

History: Historical Foundations

To prepare for this discussion, please read Chapter 1 of your textbook. In addition, review “The 100 most eminent psychologists of the 20th century”. You must also find one scholarly article written by your selected psychologist (see instructions below).  Finally, review Instructor Guidance and Announcements.  In this discussion, you will consider the historical underpinnings (or foundations) of the study of psychology by describing classic theory and research  and distinguishing variations in psychological functioning.  Be sure to use your own academic voice and apply in-text citations appropriately throughout your post.

Theory assists psychologists in better understanding human behavior, emotion, social skills, and overall mental health. In essence, theory helps us to better understand human psychological functioning, which embodies how a person achieves one’s goals that are reflected within the self in conjunction with the environment and their relationships. Thus, understanding how researchers go about formulating theories is an important foundation in the science of psychology. In this discussion, you will be exploring this process by researching a psychologist, learning about him/her, and completing the following:Select one noted psychologist from any of the included lists in “The 100 Most Eminent Psychologists of the 20th Century”. Haggbloom et al. (2002).  Locate information about this person to learn more about him/her and his/her work.Locate a scholarly article written by the individual you chose from the Ashford Library. Upon entering the library, click on the Advanced Search option in the Search box.   Enter the name of your selected psychologist in the search field.  Then, select AU Author in the drop down menu to the right of the search box.  In the second search box, enter the word psychology (no need to click on the drop down menu to select a field).Below the search boxes, look for the Limit your results section and select Limit to Full Text and Limit to Scholarly/Peer Reviewed. Then, click Search.Alternatively, you may choose a source that is identified in “

Classic Articles as Primary Source Reading in Introductory Psychology” and then search by “TI Title”.  The library will not have every source, so if you choose a book or an article that is unavailable, try another option.Summarize the contributions of the influential figure you selected to the field of psychology.  In your discussion, include the following:Describe your selected psychologist and his or her main contributions to the field.Next, summarize the scholarly article you read.  Your summary should provide an overview of the theoretical perspective and describe any empirical work (i.e., research study) that is presented in the article. For additional assistance on how to summarize an article click here. Examine how this theory/research provides insight into differences in psychological functioning. In layman’s terms, what does the theoretical perspective, that you explain, tell us about the differences between people and how they behave, think, and feel?  How might it explain why they do what they do?Illustrate with an example from your own observation or experience. What personal experiences or observations of these types of behaviors might be able to be explained by this perspective?Example: If I experienced a trauma, how might this trauma affect how I behave in certain situations?

Post your initial response of 250 words or more by Day 3 (Thursday).  Respond to at least two of your peers by Day 7 (Monday).  You are encouraged to post one or more of your required replies early each week (e.g., by Saturday) to stimulate more meaningful and interactive discourse in the discussion forum.   In addition, strive to provide a response to classmates who replied to your initial post and/or the Instructor (if applicable).  Peer responses may vary in length but should be carefully crafted and insightful.  Below are some suggestions to assist your thinking.

Guided Response:  Reply to at least one peer who chose a psychologist other than the one you selected and two or more peers overall.  The goal of the discussion forum is to foster continual dialogue, similar to what might occur in a verbal face-to-face exchange.  Consider the following questions in your responses:What additional questions do you have about the psychologist that your peer summarized?  For example, you could ask about his/her contributions to theory and/or research. Are there relevant connections between the work of the influential figure you selected and the individual selected by your peer?Share examples from your own life that illustrate your peer’s chosen theoretical perspective.

Submit the 15 interview questions only for preapproval to the instructor by the end of Day 2 of Module 7….

Submit the 15 interview questions only for preapproval to the instructor by the end of Day 2 of Module 7.

Using your questions, interview two middle-aged people (they may be your parents, relatives, or friends). Note: American Psychological Association (APA) ethical guidelines indicate that interviewees have the right to refuse to answer any question posed to them by an interviewer. Please ensure that your interviewees are aware of this and do not force an answer where the opportunity to reply has been refused. From your interviews, write an essay of 1,000-1,500 words in which you relate your findings. Where are your interviewees in relation to the development stages of Erikson, Vaillant, Levinson, and Peck? Explain your rationale for placing the interviewees as you did.
